The greatest one is that point of individuality you make. That goes to the heart of liberty. The US Constitution forbids the federal government from regulating anything not explicitly stated in Art. 1 Sect. 8. (The 10th Amendment states the ban). Education was intentionally left off of that list. If you read The Federalist, the reasons why are obvious. Even education being regulated at a state level is questionable, as it still infringes upon municipal, local, and individual freedoms.

Beyond that, common core not only does this "cookie cutter" approach, but ignores basic human cognizant development. Grades 2-5 are in the "concrete" realm of development and should remain in the applicable levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. But Common Core expects elementary students to perform meta-cognitive tasks before establishing a foundational factual and defining data base.

It is like expecting a 5th grader to solve an integral with infinite variables and no constants, and no understanding of basic multiplication or addition. Although, Common Core seems to be great in concept, because with so many families relocating from state to state, I see the need for some kind of standardization. But the reality is that each child is not a cookie-cutter copy of all other children. True learning varies from child to child, from subject to subject, and is often successfully learned in their own time frame, Leaning can't be forced into such a cookie-cutter, non-flexible pattern, when you take into consideration the individuality of each child. Forced learning is not enjoyable for the child and the material is easily forgotten. Again, I think getting all the states on the same page is a great idea, but there still has to be flexibility. We don't need any more programs that dumb-down the kids and have all their studies geared to pass standardized tests. Real learning comes when a child is authentically interested in a topic and engaged, which is garnered by creativity and flexibility in teaching. More money should be directed at having lower student to teacher ratios, so that the individual child can get a more individualize education and their educational needs met. JMHO.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13391353932576101413noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5778016576328495273.post-90963474149395739172013-11-07T20:33:52.280-06:002013-11-07T20:33:52.280-06:00Students setting goals is not the issue. In fact n...Students setting goals is not the issue. In fact not enough teachers require students to set goas and self assess. Your concern about inflation is on the right track, but you need to realize that inflation happens in the ugliest forms. Free one undreds for a Sonic drink is the one many teachers joke about. The part that isn't funny is that grades are really infated by extreme examples like the box of tissues for five points on a test or the infamous fastfood stop. People need to consider other forms of inflation, such as bonus questions and extra credit. These are also inflating grades. And what about deflation? Teachers, under this law, cannot take points off for late work. Afterall, they wouldn't, or may not, add points for assignments being turned in early.

As far as Bloom's and rubrics factor in, most curriculum crafted by Texas ISDs are analyzed according to the thinking levels in terms of both declarative and procedural knowledge. To learn more about setting higher standards, educators need to read Robert Marzano's "Classroom Instruction that Works" because it is the best single piece on instructional improvement.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5778016576328495273.post-26302048405015702462013-09-11T17:22:55.923-05:002013-09-11T17:22:55.923-05:00I have friends who work with an NPO that seeks to ...I have friends who work with an NPO that seeks to end sex slavery & human trafficking. While I am not overly optimistic about depending on this administration for any NASA expenditures, I do believe that mankind's desire to explore is natural. Students become professional test-takers. By the end of 10th grade, those who will stay in school stay, because of well-structured and healthy family dynamics. Those lacking the familial nurturing, will drop out. Now, with CSCOPE being flooded into the classrooms, students will become excellent performers to a severely skewed, narrow, and liberally dumbed-down curriculum.
Regardless of curriculum, the threats of fines or worse, will only deter those who would be deterred, coming from healthy family dynamics. Students who lack family structure inevitably get tripped up in the system somewhere. They become hopeless toward a system that has first its goal to have a body in a seat for the return of promised Federal funding.
Were I to have children still young, they would most definitely be home-schooled.
I am actually facing the possibility of having my youngest son complete his senior year with home schooling. He is intellectually past the current curriculum, and is all too aware of the already liberal and left leaning subject presentation.
My son's experience brings me to an additional perception. The cascading "global learning" CSCOPE, I predict, will bring on a new problem with drop-outs. In the information age, a dumbed-down, centrally structured schooling will have extra-intelligent students, like mine, wanting to drop out, too. This begs the question, what purpose will the passing of this legislation truly serve?
I will be encouraging Governor Perry to veto this bill if it gets to his desk. Additionally, not yet passing legislation regarding school choice is not a bad thing. Parents can home school their children in this state. The less legislation, the freer parents are in their choice.
Lastly, true education reform, in my opinion, will never occur until the Federal Department of Education is abolished. The Conservative Momhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09335280558557928760noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5778016576328495273.post-79260195759536725202013-04-02T09:16:15.117-05:002013-04-02T09:16:15.117-05:00I would be willing to bet that grade fixing partie...I would be willing to bet that grade fixing parties are more common than we think. The Lazy and Cheap Homemakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07208862341061565457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5778016576328495273.post-17910600751483118312013-03-21T15:11:39.933-05:002013-03-21T15:11:39.933-05:00Good writing is something I can appreciate.
